Suggestions on Ways to Keep the Lord’s Standards of Dating

Because the primary commitment is a little broad, these are some suggestions of what you are committing to when you say that you’ll live the For the Strength of Youth’s standards on Dating. Of course, not every suggestion applies to every person, so use them as you wish. Note for parents: another thing that you can also use these suggestions for is to give you an idea of what you may want to teach your current or future children about dating. If you want,  you can mentally change the beginning of each one to “You commit to teaching your children to…”

  • You commit to not bringing your date to a place that costs a ton of money.
  • You commit to not bringing your date to a place where you don’t get to interact and meet each other, such as a movie theater.
  • You commit to nor bringing your date to a place where you no longer can feel the spirit.
  • You commit to not bring your date to a place where you are completely alone.
  • You commit to not dating until you are at least 16 years old.
  • You commit to going with one or more additional couples when you begin dating.
  • You commit to avoid going on frequent dates with the same person until you are ready to find an eternal companion.
  • You commit to not having a boyfriend/girlfriend until you are ready to find an eternal companion.
  • You commit to making dating and marriage a high priority as you enter your adult years.
  • You commit to being kind and respectful as you ask someone on a date, whether or not they say yes.
  • You commit to being kind and respectful as someone asks you on a date, whether or not you like them and whether or not you say “yes”.
  • You commit to being courteous when your date is talking.
  • You commit to being courteous when you are talking.
  • You commit to being courteous to your date in general.
  • You commit to trying to get to know your date.
  • You commit to inviting your parents to get to know those you date.
  • You commit to not dating a person with low standards of modesty.
  • You commit to not dating a person who curses all the time.
  • You commit to not dating a person who smokes, drinks, or otherwise disobeys the word of wisdom.
  • You commit to not dating a person who treats everybody horribly.
  • You commit to only dating those with high moral standards and in whose company you can maintain your standards.
  • You commit to keeping the law of chastity.
  • You commit to protecting your date’s honor and virtue.
  • You commit to being a righteous influence on those you date.
